METTSASS

by Ettore Sottsass, 1972

Mettsass is a unique table created by Ettore Sottsass in 1972 and made by BD Barcelona. Forty years after its creation, BD Barcelona reissued the Mettsass table modelled on the original and presented it in 2012 at the “Salone del Mobile”, the Milan Furniture Fair. TAGWERC, official partner of BD Barcelona, offers the Mettsass table as a certified original. The connection between Sottsass and BD Barcelona originated in the early 1970s, when the architect and designer is said to have travelled regularly to Barcelona for love. It was the time when BD Barcelona had just formed and the paths of the BD founders and Sottsass crossed in the Catalan metropolis.

Mettsass MESA

The Mettsass table is one of the first objects produced by BD Barcelona – formerly Boccaccio Design. To this day, Mettsass is produced in the original dimensions and materials of the past. The shape of the table is reminiscent of the style of Postmodern Design, for which Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis Design Movement are still known today. However, Sottsass designed the Mettsass table, which looked like a graphic body, almost a decade earlier. His strong identification with his work is reflected in the name of the table: So-ttsass becomes Me-ttsass. The first syllable “Me” stands for “Mesa”, the Spanish word for “table”.

The Mettsass table is one of Sottsass’s first works, which advertise his later, Postmodern Design style and which he has followed almost ten years later as part of the Memphis Design Movement. The metal structure, consisting of flat steel sheets, is painted in “signal red” (RAL tone 3001). The glass plate at the top has the same colour and thus forms a unit merging with the base. The table surface measures 110 centimeters in width and depth. The height of the table is 73 centimeters.

The Mettsass table top tapers conically at the bottom and resembles an upside-down pyramid. The base runs in the form of a rectangle before it ends in a smaller pyramid, the base. This well thought-out construction offers a lot of legroom with maximum stability. This makes Mettsass the ideal table for breakfast for two, a work corner integrated into the room, as a basis for the home office or a statement in the living room and winter garden.
