The design group Superstudio, known for avant-garde designs and probably the best-known representatives of the design direction Radical Design, designed Sofo in 1968. Sofo consists of an armchair and a two-seater armchair, which thanks to their design can be lined up almost endlessly, but can also be placed individually – just as the room situation requires. Expressive colour blocking in combination with rally stripes support the racy look and make Sofo a fancy seating option.
Rally stripes were used by motorsport racing teams in the late 1960s/early 1970s to mark their racing cars – for better differentiation and to visually support the streamlined shape. This marking was adopted in the 1980s by sporty drivers with racing ambitions and the car industry also sometimes uses this design on some models, such as the Ford Mustang. Rally stripes are meant to symbolise a stylisation of the race track – in any case, they make the armchair Sofo a curvy and streamlined seat, low-slung and perfectly shaped.
And the colour of the rally stripes is always in strong contrast to the colour of the car body. On the Sofo armchair, the basic colour is either green or pink. Pink rally stripes form the contrast on the green Sofo armchair. On the pink Sofo armchair, orange rally stripes support the dynamics. With a length and depth of 82 centimeters, the Sofo armchair measures 70 centimeters in total height. The seat height is 40 centimeters.
The basic shape of the Sofo armchair consists of a polyurethane rectangle that is cut into two equal parts to create two Sofo armchairs. This symmetry offers a multitude of possible combinations and makes the Sofo seating family perfect for creating seating islands that can be used from several sides. But Sofo is also ideal in a home ambiance, as well as a waiting area in a foyer or as a design element on a seemingly endless long wall, under a window, in an alcove, next to a bed, in a bar.
The upholstery fabric is an integral part of the design of the Sofo armchair and was also developed by Superstudio especially for Sofo, according to its creator Natalini. He also pays tribute to Superstudio’s surrealist and futuristic approach to the design of Sofo.
The Sofo armchair is a unique design object that perfectly combines form and function. A must-have for people with a passion for the extraordinary and an excellent investment that can otherwise only be seen in design museums and in the changing exhibition in the showroom at TAGWERC. This makes the Sofo armchair an emotional companion rather than a functional piece of furniture, precisely the perfect choice for art connoisseurs and lovers of exclusive furnishing objects.
