Calvet Hanger Wardrobe

Apart from the main furniture, the Antoni Gaudí collection by BD Barcelona consists of a number of smaller art objects that are particularly interesting due to their complexity and craftsmanship. One of these objects is the Calvet wall wardrobe, designed for the house of the same name in Barcelona.

With a length of 25 centimeters, this wardrobe hook may be the smallest piece of furniture Gaudí has ever produced. Producing it, however, requires more complexity than any other, larger work, as evidenced by the details of the coat hook, if you look at it more closely.

The Calvet wardrobe consists of a central rectangular wooden body with curved edges. The surface is interrupted by three daring openings and connected in the middle with two brass-coated steel bands to create another pair of elements, also made of wood. Accessories such as scarves and umbrellas find their place here. Brass-coated steel straps give the wall wardrobe a certain vibrancy and surprise.

The former landlord, an outspoken forest lover and mushroom collector, let his preference flow into the interior. Thus, Gaudí formed a massive coat hook, which replicates the shape of a mushroom and is wrapped around by the steel bands and apparently held.

In 1975, BD Barcelona revived the furniture of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. Furniture designed by Antoni Gaudí for his houses Casa Batlló and Casa Calvet is produced according to exactly the same elaborate production processes that were also used in the production of the first pieces at that time. In addition to the „Batlló Chair” and “Calvet Chair” named after the houses, the “Calvet Mirror” and this “Calvet wall wardrobe”, there are also stylistic elements such as door handles and peepholes, so-called “spies”, which make Gaudí’s unique “Modernisme” design style, a Spanish style of Art Nouveau, tangible in the own four walls.

The Calvet wall wardrobe is part of BD Barcelona’s Art Editions, which includes exclusively in-house art objects – exclusive, unique and of timeless elegance and value. TAGWERC, as the official partner of BD Barcelona, offers the original designs from the Art Editions of BD Barcelona online and offline.

Antoni Gaudí is one of the most famous - if not the most famous - Spanish architect of the 20th century. Born in Catalonia, he created a series of fantastic buildings in his home city of Barcelona that still attract millions of visitors every year. To match his buildings, Gaudí created a range of furnishings that reflect his design style, 'Modernisme'.
